The story of the 200th and 515th Coast Artilleries Regiment from New Mexico, the first to fire at the enemy, and cited as the best antiaircraft unit in the armed forces. - Roderick HallLanguage/Translation Info: EnglishSummary: A thoroughly researched account of the 200th Coast Artillery (Anti-Aircraft) Regiment of the New Mexico National Guard, which arrived in the Philippines only a few months before Pearl Harbor. The regiment was incomplete and lacked the required number of anti aircraft guns. It saw action on the first day of the war, firing against Japanese planes attacking Clark Field. Many of the shells were ancient, rusty and unreliable. The under-equipped regiment was split into two, with a smaller unit, the 515th Coast Artillery (Anti-Aircraft) Regiment, assigned to defend Manila. Both were sent to Bataan when the order to execute War Plan Orange was issued and the New Mexicans fought until ordered to surrender. The book narrates the men’s ordeal as prisoners of war and their eventual liberation. The 1996 edition of the book contained additional material not available to the author when the book first came out in 1992. The author, a writer and historian from New Mexico, interviewed or contacted virtually all the survivors of the 200th and 515th Coast Artillery Regiments. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
