He details his experiences in the hospital in Little Baguio, Bataan; surrender on April 9; the difficulties of a doctor without medicine in the prison camps of O’Donnell and Cabanatuan; hell ship to Japan and liberation. Well-written, this was one of the first books to be published about Bataan and the American POW experience in the Philippines and Japan. It remains a standard work in researching and understanding what happened during the war, and how the American POWs, particularly the doctors, went to great lengths in order to survive – and help their comrades live. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
