They saw the internment experience form different perspectives: two were mothers at the time, two were children growing up.
Margaret was married to a mining engineer in North Luzon; her husband joined the army but died in prison camp. She fell in love in camp and married Jerry Sams after the war.
Jane was also married to a mining engineer, but was in Mindanao when the war started. She was interned in the derelict Happy Life Blues dance hall, and later brought to Santo Tomas.
Sascha was nine in 1941 and lived a plush life in a sugar plantation just south of Manila; she was interned in Santo Tomas.
Karen was also nine when the war broke out, but lived in northern Luzon; her father worked in a gold mine. The family evacuated to Manila and was interned in Santo Tomas. Karen was allowed to live outside the camp in Holy Ghost College for a while.
