Ming blue-and-white pieces recovered from Oton. At left is a milk bottle, ca 16th century, measuring 5.5 inches high. The squat and spherical kendi has a flared neck and mammiform spout. At the right is a 15th century porcelain oblong box, 7.2 inches long and decorated with floral and leaf designs. Designs for both pieces were painted under the white glaze, cobalt blue being one of the few ceramic colors capable of standing the high temperature required to melt the porcelain glaze and consequently not erased upon glazecoating. Although a few blue -and-white pieces were produced earlier during the late Yuan dynasty, they were the chief wares of the Ming period (1369-1844)Image type: OriginalMedia format: With prints
