Willem Blaeu, Amsterdam, 1650. 21 3/4 in. x 16 in. Willem Blaeu (1572-1638) was the foremost geographer of his age, and his son Joan, by building up their stock of sheet maps and gathering them into the magnificent 12 -volume Atlas Maior, earned the firm its reputation as the greatest geographical publishing house of all time. The inception of the Bleu atlas can be traced back to the publication of his first atlas-sized map in 1604, but it was the purchase of 38 copper plates from the estate of Jodocus Hondius in 1629 which made the project possible.
