De los Reyes, a carriage-maker from Vigan, joined the revolutionary army and rose to the rank of major. As aide-de-camp to Brigadier General Manuel Tinio, overall commander of the Filipino forces in the north, he brought with him logistic support from a wide network of rich relatives.
