Araullo was a judge of the Court of First Instance of Manila before his appointment as associate justice of the Supreme Court in 1913 and chief justice in 1921. Photo of third Filipino chief justice, Supreme Court. Renacimiento Filipino. Third Filipino Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Manuel Araullo, was born in Batangas on January 1, 1853. After studying philosophy at Letran and theology for some time in Santo Tomas, he took up law in the same university and graduated in 1876. The following year, he sailed for Spain to pursue his doctorate in Civil Law at the Universidad Central de Madrid. After his graduation in 1878, he practised law in Spain and while there, wrote three important political works: "Desheredacion," "Casos a que Procede," and "Juicio Critico." He then became a member of the Academy of Legislation and Jurisprudence, and later elected member of the Ateneo Cientifico y Literario de Madrid. Araullo returned to the Philippine in 1879 and held several important government positions. He was Relator de la Real Audiencia for 10 years, Secretary of the Government, Attorney-General of Manila, Fiscal of the Audiencia de Manila. Then he became a professor of Mercantile Law at Santo Tomas from 1892-1898. In 1899, he was named President of the Civil Branch of the Supreme Court. Judge of the Court of First Instance of Pampanga, and later of Manila. In 1903, he headed the committee assigned to prepare the Philippine Commercial, Civilk and Penal Codes together with Washington Goldsborough, Thomas Street and Rafael Palma. He was then appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. When Victorino Mapa died in 1921, Araullo assumed the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He held this position until his death on July 26, 1924.
