A grandson of Ralp Waldo Emerson on his mother''s side, Cameron was a son to a brilliant businessman who put Bell Telephone Company together. He settled down as accountant for Stone and Webster, later rising to the company''s third highest position. Forbes was managing the family''s banking firm when he suddenly turned to public service.
