Maria Asuncion Francisco Gener, 80 years old, started working in Quiapo after graduating from Torres High School in Tondo. With young children to support, she decided to go to Japan on a tourist visa and was undocumented for 20 years. She became fluent in Japanese and held all kinds of jobs to support her family back in the Philippines. Tired of living in fear of immigration police, she decided to come home and join her elder sister, Flora, selling Sampaguita garlands. She has been sick lately and cannot work. Source: Rick Rocamora.
