General Note(s):
"75th year, Remembering World War II, 1941-2016, Freedom for the Future"Language/Translation Info: EnglishSummary: "Heroes are born and heroes are made. In the case of Col. Emmanuel V. de Ocampo, we have an example of a rare breed of hero -- one who was born a hero, and one who met the challenges and became a hero -- even long after the shooting was over. Col. de Ocampo hit the ground running, so to speak, from childhood: opting not to let his humble beginnings in the farmlands of Negros Occidental, he strove to rise above his socio-economic class and wound up studying in Manila. This was a feat of no small proportions, but more was to come: he went to college and joined the Reserve Officers Training Corps. When World War II broke out, joined the fabled Hunters ROTC guerrillas and distinguished himself in leadership, courage and ingenuity in the line of fire. His medals speak humbly of his exploits as a guerrilla leader, rousing his men to win victories and ensuring that they were taken care of. Medals themselves tell only a fraction of the story, for the Philippine Distinguished Conduct Star and Military Medal of Merit, along with the US Silver Star, cannot fully tell stories of the young leader rising to guerrilla division commander, brilliant leadership and the respect he gained from his men. His unit was active in the fighting to liberate allied internees in Los Banos Internment Camp; in the liberation of Nichols Field and Fort McKinley from determined Japanese veteran fighters. Even after World War II, Col. de Ocampo continued his fight to develop himself and contribute to national development -- never forgetting the men whom he had led during the war. Professionally he became a licensed engineer, but he kept on fighting for his men -- the Filipino veterans of World War II -- in various fields of battle, be it the Veterans Foundation of the Philippines, the Philippine Veterans Bank, the government. He was a veteran, he was a hero. But he never forgot his fellow veterans -- heroes themselves. And in doing so, Col. de Ocampo, born a hero, continued to serve as a hero -- a role model for others -- until he no longer could. Only death -- which he had cheated so many times before -- ended his last campaigns." - Dr. Ricardo Trota Jose, University of the Philippines List(s) this item appears in: Guerrilla warfare | WWII heroes
