| General note | A serious shortage of consumer goods resulting from the closure of factories before the Japanese arrived in Manila in 1942 sent the prices of commodities soaring. As a remedy, the Japanese Military Administration introduced military notes, variably called "Mickey Mouse money", "lapad" and "gurami", which Filipinos believed had no exchange value. About 11 billion pesos worth of this currency was issued by the Japanese from 1942 to 1944. YYY |
