This series was first published by MacArthur’s headquarters in 1950, but was not made available until after MacArthur’s death in 1964.

Volume I, prepared by MacArthur’s staff under the direction of his chief of intelligence, Maj. Gen. Charles A. Willoughby, details MacArthur’s military campaigns from the start of the war, including the defense of the Philippines in 1941-1942, the defense of Australia, MacArthur’s leap-frogging strategy in the Southwest Pacific Area and return to the Philippines.

Chapter 1 deals with the period of the Japanese offensive in the Pacific, including a few pages on the defense of the Philippines. Plans for the return to the Philippines, the Leyte, Mindoro, Luzon and Southern Philippines campaigns are detailed in chapters VII-XI. The excerpt in the Hall collection, Chapter X, is devoted solely to the Philippine guerrilla resistance movement, focusing on those units which came under his command (there is no mention of the Huks). With excellent maps in full color.

Understandably uncritical of MacArthur, this work provides much information but must be used in conjunction with other sources. [Note: Volume II, in two parts, is also important in that it presents the Japanese side of the Pacific War, with emphasis on the Southern advance and the Southwest Pacific theater of operations] - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
