The good years :

Rogers, Paul P.

The good years : MacArthur and Sutherland / Paul P. Rogers. - New York : Praeger, 1990. - xx, 381 p. : ill., maps ; 25 x 16 cm.

Important firsthand (coupled with serious research) account by the stenographer and chief clerk in MacArthur’s headquarters from October 1941 to the end of 1942.

Rogers focuses on the relationship between MacArthur and his chief of staff, Gen. Richard K. Sutherland, and brings to life activities in the topmost levels of the US Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE). He discloses many important details and provides an insider’s perspective of both generals and the decisions they made. Rogers quotes verbatim from many letters he himself had typed during the war, and covers the period immediately before the war, through Bataan and Corregidor, the evacuation of MacArthur, and the beginning of MacArthur’s offensive in New Guinea. Rogers provides a final chapter where he explains the existing MacArthur files in the MacArthur Memorial – files which he had maintained and was very familiar with.

A subsequent volume ("The Bitter Years") covers the progressive deterioration of the relationship of MacArthur and Sutherland from 1943 to the end of war, again from an insider’s perspective. After the war, Rogers became a university professor and scholar and is thus able to lend scholarly authority to his own personal experiences. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
