Bataan diary :

Schaefer, Chris.

Bataan diary : an American family in World War II, 1941-1945 / by Chris Schaefer - Houston, Tex : Riverview Pub., c2004. - xiv, 434 p. : ill. maps, 22 x 14 cm.

The title of this book is a misnomer: the book is neither a diary nor is it entirely about Bataan. Rather, it is a researched account of an American family separated by war: Frank Lloyd, a professional US Army officer and his wife, Evelyn and their two children.

The family arrived in the Philippines in June 1940, but Evelyn and the children were ordered back to the US in May 1941. Frank, as an army officer, was Provost Marshall of Fort McKinley, and served in the Bataan campaign, where he was made adviser to the 4th Philippine Constabulary Regiment. He decided not to surrender, and evaded the Japanese with the help of Filipinos; he then joined the guerrilla resistance movement in Luzon.

The account of the guerrillas in Central Luzon is a strong point of this book. On the other side of the Pacific, Evelyn did all she could to help in the war effort and try to obtain information about her husband. Frank survived the war, and was reunited with his beloved family.

The story is told using diaries which both Frank and Evelyn kept during the war (Frank’s diary is entitled Bataan Diary, since he spent most of the occupation years in the jungles of Bataan; this is where the title of the book comes from), and exhaustive research including interviews with surviving veterans, documents in the US National Archives and other materials. Unfortunately marred by some minor errors. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
