Japan trading ship,16th century
Though sporadic trade with the Japanese dates back to the 1400s, it was not until the 1580s that the number of Japanese ships calling at Manila increased. By the end of the 16th century, at least sixteen Japanese ships would yearly come to Manila. Most would sail away with hoards of jars from Luzon, which the Japanese discovered were good for keeping tea.
