Saint Joseph with Child Jesus
Saint Joseph with Child Jesus
Ayala Museum Research Team
Image of St. Joseph carrying the Infant Jesus, done in the ornate style. Head and hands are made of ivory; wooden framework underneath richly embroidered velvet cloth originally in green and yellow; stands nearly two feet high including the gesso base. Provenance: Camiguin.
An ornate statue is distinguised from a classical piece in that it seldom has carved hair and that while both styles make use of glass eyes, the ornate adds the use of human hair for eyelashes. Base decoration (lotus design?) is probably an Oriental influence.
