San Roque

San Roque Ayala Museum Research Team

A statue of the Catarman patron saint, placed at the side altar and used during processions; also done in polychromed hard wood in the classical style. The saint was born in Montpellier, France in 1295., gave up his possessions after the death of his parents and devoted his time to healing the afflicted when an epidemic of a plague hit Italy. At Piacenza he caught the disease and consequently banished to a forest where he nearly died of hunger, had it not been for a dog that brought him a piece of bread. Upon his return to Montpellier, he was arrested on suspicion of being a spy and imprisoned. He died in jail on August 16, 1327.
