Our Lady of the Pillar

Our Lady of the Pillar

On January 9, 1724, Governor-General Alfonso Fajardo de la Tenza founded Colegio de San Ildefonso to meet the needs of several young Catholics banished from Japan. In the church adjoining the college, the Jesuit rector enshrined a wooden Marian image which he brought from Spain. Following the expulsion of the order in 1768, the administration of the school and the care of the statue were taken over by Fr. Vicente Ignacio de Arroyo, then religious-in- charge of Sta. Cruz pueblo . A novena dedicated to the image was written by Julian del Pilar, O. M. in 1839.
