Jose Paciano Garcia Laurel
Before he became president during the war, Laurel was a cabinet member (1922-1923), senator (1925-1931), legal practitioner (1932-1933), constitutionalist (1934), and jurist (1935-1941). The first and only president of the Second Philippine Republic poses before the flag in October 1943. Laurel was president of the Preparatory Commission for Philippine Independence that drafted the proposed Constitution which a popular convention ratified in September 1943. He was soon elected president of the future republic by the National Assembly created by the same Constitution.
