Abdul Baqui Butu

Butu (standing, left), who represented Mindanao and Sulu in the Senate in 1917, is shown with his family. Born in Jolo in 1865, Butu descended from Mantiri Asip, the leading minister of Raja Baginda, the first Malay prince who ruled Sulu. As prime minister to Sultan Jamalul Kiram, he concluded the Bates Treaty with the American government in 1898.
