Gregorio Labayan Aglipay

Aglipay ran for the Commonwealth presidency in 1935, believing he could count on the support of his church members. He placed third, receiving 14 percent of the vote. Photoengraving of the Aglipayan church founder. Shown is the Roman Catholic priest and member of the Malolos Congress on whom Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo conferred the title "Military Vicar General" on 20 October 1898. The following day, Fr. Aglipay issued a manifesto urging the Filipino clergy to renounce their allegiance to the existing hierarchy and to form a Filipino organization within the Catholic Church. He was born on 4 May 1860 in Batac, Ilocos Norte and died on 1 September 1940.
