Sinamay store

By the 1840s, the British were exporting machine-made Manchester textiles to the Philippines at prices local fabrics could not compete with. Piña and jusi contrinued to be produced as specialty items, but in limited quantities. Other local fabrics, such as Ilocos cotton, sinamay--which is woven from abaca--and ramie had either priced themselves out of the market or suffered in comparison to imported cotton and linen.
