Vigan Cathedral Ayala Museum Research Team

Photo of the restored facade with Ionic columns framing three windows. To the sides are aisles which are flanked by pilasters on tops of which have been placed Chinese Fu dogs. The cathedral began as a chapel of wood and nipa in 1574. Construction was authorized by Gov. Jose Basco y Vargas in 1786. The present structure was completed in 1880. Its classic tower has a weather cock (symbolic of St. Peter) as the spire.
