Introduces new information and detail about Davao during the war, from one who was a senior member of Davao’s population. The family evacuates when the Japanese land; but later return to Davao City. Col. Campo is arrested by the Japanese on suspicion of aiding guerrillas, and is tortured and jailed. Col. Campo’s travails and feelings are recorded graphically, and he is critical of those Filipinos who collaborated with the Japanese as well as US Army officers who did not protect Davao.
Morales adds much more background information on the conditions and personalities of Davao, providing a close up look of Davao City under Japanese rule. A unique and important book because it is one of a few which provides an insider’s look at a city in Mindanao. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
