She had a different kind of beauty which seemed to attract all sorts of men, especially Americans and Japanese. Her (second) American husband, Gotlieb Neigum, was an infantryman with the US 31st Infantry Regiment who fought in Bataan and marched the Death March. Alice remained in Manila to look after her children, taking on a job with a Japanese firm. Her boss made romantic passes at her, as well as an agent of the Kempeitai. She was reunited with him briefly, clandestinely, in Bulacan, when Gotlieb was on a work detail in Calumpit. Gotlieb escaped the detail and was smuggled to Laguna through Alice’s relatives’ help, and joined the guerrillas. Alice rejoined her husband in Laguna and joined Markings Guerillas, only to be caught by the Japanese in a zona. Amazingly, she was protected by the commander of the zoning force, Major Murata. Through various twists and turns, she is brought to various towns in Laguna, then to Zambales, and finally back to Manila. She barely escaped the devastation of south Manila when she moved to San Miguel in the nick of time.
