Bell was a physics professor at the Protestant Silliman University in Dumaguete when the war broke out. Rather than surrender to the Japanese, Professor Bell and many faculty members and students of the university evacuated to the hills. Bell decided to join the resistance forces and, because of his experience, organizational skills, and position of authority, he was appointed Civil Affairs Officer for Negros Oriental. After the surrender of the USAFFE in May 1942, Bell remained in the hills, joining the guerrilla resistance movement and coordinating civil-military relations, food production, liaison officer with the Cebu and Mindanao guerrillas, and other important activities. As the Japanese knew who he was and were determinedly searching for him, he was evacuated in early 1944 to Australia by submarine, together with other American civilians. While centering on Prof. Bell’s role in the guerrillas, the book also narrates the development of the guerrilla forces in Negros, the different factions, the threats faced, and prominent individuals. An American edition of this book was published in 2009. - Prof. Ricardo T. JoseSummary: A fascinating look at Filipino-American resistance to Japanese occupation of Negros Island during WWII, based on both published and unpublished accounts of the Silliman University pioneers and their guerrilla activities. - Roderick Hall List(s) this item appears in: Guerrillas - Visayas, Mindanao
